The new
value-driven cables reflect Accell's concern towards environmental
conservation through smart product design and packaging. These
cables are manufactured to the stringent "RoHS" directive
and the Proposition 65 standard, enacted to reduce the amount
of hazardous chemicals used in production.
Green
Cable Compliance to Proposition 65
All of
Accell's cable products, including its GreenCable®
products, comply with the guidelines of Proposition 65. What
is Proposition 65? In 1986, California voters approved an
initiative to address their growing concerns about exposure
to toxic chemicals. That initiative became the Safe Drinking
Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known by its
original name of Proposition 65. The Proposition was intended
by its authors to protect California citizens and the State's
drinking water sources from chemicals known to cause cancer,
birth defects or other reproductive harm, and to inform citizens
about exposures to such chemicals The chemical list contains
a wide range of naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals
that are known to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive
harm. These chemicals include additives or ingredients in
pesticides, common household products, food, drugs, dyes,
or solvents. Listed chemicals may also be used in manufacturing.
The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA)
administers the Proposition 65 program. OEHHA, which is part
of the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA),
also evaluates all currently available scientific information
on substances considered for placement on the Proposition
65 list.
GreenCable®
Compliance to the RoHS Directive
The RoHS
Directive stands for "the Restriction of the use of certain
Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment".
This directive, adopted
in February 2003, bans the placing on the European market
of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more
than agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium,
polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl
ether (PBDE) flame retardants. Although Federal RoHS-like
regulation in the US is unlikely in the near to medium term,
Accell is taking a leadership role in creating products that
comply with the stingent RoHS directive. The Green Cable products
involve coordinating Accell's efforts with those of business
partners who supply components, devices, materials and packaging
with the objective to improve competitiveness with respect
to Accell and its business partners through the development
of environmentally friendly products that reduce environmental
impact.
